Welcome to the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce e-Journal! With November comes cooler weather and warmer hearts, so this month we are focusing on what our community does to give back. CHAMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS


Attend the Last Chamber After Hours of 2009 This Thursday

Check out Gainesville's newest downtown hotel, Hampton Inn & Suites, while celebrating our Platinum Circle of Champions Cox Communications and Glaeser Realty Thursday, Nov. 19 at the last Chamber After Hours of 2009.  Parking is available at the Commerce Building and in the downtown parking garage, and will be validated at the Hampton Inn & Suites.  Members: $10; Future Members: $20.  There is no need to register for this event. 

We will also be having a food drive at this event and encourage all guests to bring certain non-perishable items to help students and their families who are in need of food this holiday season.  You can see the list here.

Take the Regional Innovation and Business Survey today and help steer Gainesville's economic future. 

Innovation Gainesville is a community-wide initiative created to transform our local economy and become a leader in emerging technological fields.  Guiding this effort, the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Council for Economic Outreach are collaborating with leaders from business, academia, government and other supporting institutions who are committed to Gainesville’s transformation and are focused on leveraging our area’s critical resources.  For more information, go to InnovationGainesville.com. 

The City of Gainesville Wants Your Input

The City of Gainesville has begun the Evaluation Appraisal Report (EAR) process for the Comprehensive Plan--a plan mandated by the Florida Legislature and designed to help counties and municipalities map out growth. Every seven to 10 years governments are required to evaluate their Comprehensive Plans to identify major issues and opportunities.

GTEC start-up WiPower, Inc. received the ITFlorida award for Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurialism at the 7th Annual Awards Gala and Tech Forum on Nov. 10.  Read More

Save the date for the 2010 Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting on Jan. 28. Join us for dinner, awards and entertainment as we celebrate our successes and unveil exciting opportunities for 2010. Registration opens Dec. 1. City Commission Approves Extension of Utility Permits

Recognizing that the economy has caused financing problems for some projects, the Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 360, making it possible for local governments to extend permits and allow businesses to move forward with projects immediately after financing is secured.

Representatives from the Business Community Coalition (BCC) worked with City Commissioners and GRU to successfully reach a compromise on the implementation of extensions of utility permits in association with SB 360.  Read More

PACE Center for Girls Breaks Ground on Expansion

On Nov.16 PACE Center for Girls, an organization focused on guiding girls to success, began its own transformation. The group celebrated its groundbreaking for a new 4,600 sq. foot facility that will add seven much-needed classrooms to PACE.  Read More

Member Announcements will appear in the Chamber e-Journal every Tuesday; submissions are due before noon on the Thursday before the requested appearance date. All member announcements will appear ONLY ONCE as indicated by the requested appearance date. All member announcements will expire with the publication of the next e-Journal on the following Tuesday; they will NOT be archived as part of the e-Journal.  Announcements should be in paragraph form and contain no
more than 100 words. Links to documents or e-mail addresses
will NOT work. 

Announcements should be newsworthy, i.e. recently
received awards/honors, special recognition, announcing new
personnel/promotions, employee certifications, employee
retirements, company anniversaries/milestones, company
relocation, new products or services, etc.  For event announcements and advertising opportunities, please submit requests to chrisj@gainesvillechamber.com.
