Update on the MTPO’s Plan East Gainesville Committee

On Monday, August 1, 2016, the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) Plan East Gainesville subcommittee met to follow up on recommendations from the May 2, 2016 meeting. At that time, the members agreed to sunset the MTPO Plan East Gainesville subcommittee and reform as a joint committee of the Gainesville City Commission and the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners. In the interim, MTPO staff, City and County staff and the Gainesville Chamber provided data to the members as they move forward with the new joint committee.

On August 1, MTPO Executive Director Scott Koons provided an update on progress made since the original MTPO Plan East Gainesville subcommittee formed in 2001, which include the opening of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Waldo Road and the redevelopment of the University of Florida Eastside Campus. The subcommittee members then approved unanimously to sunset the MTPO Plan East Gainesville subcommittee. Mayor Lauren Poe and County Commissioner Ken Cornell will spearhead the effort to form and staff the new joint committee.
