Chamber Launches District 1 Business CouncilJuly 4th, 2016 by gainesvillechamber
The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce is calling on businesses located in the City of Gainesville’s District 1 to serve on its newly created District 1 Business Council. The Chamber’s Board of Directors recently cast a unanimous vote to create the District 1 Business Council in response to a need voiced by leaders-in particular, Gainesville City Commissioner Charles Goston-for increased economic opportunity in the area. The Board’s intent in creating the Council also includes augmenting existing District 1-focused efforts of key organizations including the Community Redevelopment Agency, the City of Gainesville EEO, the University of Florida, Santa Fe College, the Cade Museum for Creativity and Innovation, the African American Accountability Alliance, the Alachua County Chapter of the NAACP, and others.
“We believe that a district-specific, inclusive approach to achieving the Chamber’s mission of facilitating economic prosperity, business growth and community progress will move the needle for the entire region,” said Chamber Board Chair Todd Powell. “We want to raise awareness of the vital business community that exists in District 1, and also strengthen the business-community presence behind efforts to increase investment in the area.”
The new Business Council will focus on enhancing economic activity and opportunity in District 1 by working collaboratively to achieve advancements in areas such as economic development, capital investment, business growth, leadership development, and image enhancement.
“I see the formation of this Council as a step for District 1 toward securing the kinds of investments we’ve seen in other city districts, particularly in the western half of the city,” said District 1 Commissioner Charles Goston. “I look forward to working with the Chamber to help to guide the work of this Council, and am personally appealing to District 1 businesses to participate.”
Businesses owned or operated in District 1 are encouraged to sign up and receive council meeting invites along with economic development and policy updates. To the extent possible, the District 1 Council will mirror businesses operating in the community in terms of industry and business size. Parties interested in serving on the Council will find additional information as well as an electronic application form here.
The members of the Council will be announced on Tuesday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m. The Council will hold its inaugural meeting the same day, immediately after the announcement.
