Your Child Can Learn to Code at STEAM Summer Camp 10% Discount for Chamber MembersMarch 5th, 2016 by gainesvillechamber
Gainesville’s youth is growing up in a time when innovation and entrepreneurship is at their fingertips. Our schools are filled with aspiring coders, app developers and game designers. There are also children who don’t want to be programmers but are constant consumers of technology. Their minds can also benefit greatly from learning the language of computing to understand and control the machines that power our world. Providing our youth with the technology education they need is difficult, and doing so without losing site of physical fitness is even more difficult.
This summer, two Gainesville startups are joining forces to combine technology, art and fitness to create the ultimate STEAM summer program. Gainesville Dev Academy, a software development coding school, joins forces with Youth Combine, a not-for-profit youth health and fitness organization, to create the STEAM Youth Academy summer program. The STEAM program combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Art + design and Math education with fitness programming to build the greatest generation of youth. This means children have a distinctive – and local – opportunity this summer to improve their bodies and brains in weeklong programs that include fitness and computer coding. Everyone knows the importance of a healthy body, but parents might not realize why programming is an essential skill for their children’s future success.
The STEAM Youth Academy, will offer four one-week courses in June and July for children 8 to 14 years old. The courses are 8a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. (Program weeks: June 13th-17th, June 27th-July 1st, July 11th- 15th and July 25th-29th). Each weeklong course may be taken separately or combined with any other weeklong course during the summer term.
