We Are Losing Opportunities; However, You Can Help

Sector plans like Envision Alachua are coming to life all around our country. For example, Caterpillar—a global corporation, which designs, markets and sells machinery, engines, financial products and insurance—was looking to build an 850,000 square-foot facility. The company was attracted to college town Athens, Georgia because the city had the 240-acre, shovel-ready parcel the company needed. So Caterpillar invested $200 million in capital to locate in the area.

At EnvisionAlachuaforBiz.com, 47 of your business colleagues, fellow companies, friends and neighbors have declared their support for Envision Alachua – a key Chamber priority slated to bring similar, game-changing opportunities to the Greater Gainesville region. Supporters, include Advantage Publishing Inc., Banyan Biomarkers, Charles Perry Partners Inc., Jackson Stoneworks LLC among others. These supporters understand that by not moving Envision Alachua forward, this region is allowing opportunities to slip through its fingers and land in the hands of other communities.

Since Caterpillar’s expansion, the opportunity realized by Athens, Georgia has been exponential. To date, 700 local residents have been hired into jobs, such as quality technicians, welders and assemblers. The company plans to hire a total of 1,400 additional residents by 2018, at an annual payroll of $75 million. Athens estimates an economic impact to the area of $1.4 billion.

Imagine the opportunities a business deal like this could bring to Greater Gainesville: tens of millions in additional payroll available to spend with local businesses, and exponential opportunities for your children, grandchildren and many generations to come – all without sacrificing the beauty of our natural environment. For instance, 90 percent of Plum Creek lands would be permanently conserved, committing only 3,381 acres for development. If you support game-changing opportunities for your community, business and family, visit EnvisionAlachuaforBiz.com to join the supporters.
