More than 50 Students Joined 30 Business Professionals at Inaugural Career Discoveries Workshop

On Saturday Oct. 17, the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a three-hour workshop, Career Discoveries, to educate middle and high school students and parents on emerging career opportunities in the region’s five major industry sectors: advanced logistics and manufacturing, advanced materials, agricultural life sciences, human life sciences, and software and information technology.  This inaugural session of Career Discoveries took place at the Professional Academies Magnet at Loften High School, 3000 E. University Ave. There are plans to make this workshop an annual event.

CareerDiscoveries-speakersKeynote speaker John Spence, world-renowned author and one of the top 100 business thought leaders in America, captivated students’ attention by sharing his own personal story of success and ways he overcame his obstacles. Attendees then heard from local business professionals who presented a sneak peek into their respective industry, enticing them to visit their break out session afterwards. During the break out session, panelists further illustrated specific pathways and career opportunities and answered each attendee’s question(s). Students then ate lunch sponsored by Gator Domino’s and also had an opportunity to visit informational booths that connected them to various resources within the community, such as Junior Achievement, The Education Foundation’s ‘Take Stock in Children’, Santa Fe College, University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and more.
