Gainesville Named Florida’s Ninth Safest City from HurricanesJune 8th, 2015 by gainesvillechamber
HomeInsurance.com, a consumer-centric insurance marketplace, recently conducted a study to find the safest Florida cities from hurricanes and related threats – and Gainesville ranked #9.
To find the safest cities, analysts at HomeInsurance.com used a variety of data points to create total score for 35 Florida cities with populations greater than 10,000. Analysts used the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration storm events database to factor in occurrences of hurricanes and tropical storms in each area. The total score also took into account the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System. Data sources were only available at the county level. Cities were assigned points based on the information for the county in which the city is predominately located.
Gainesville ranked #9 on the list, despite high tropical storm and flooding scores, due to having no occurrences of hurricanes during the period.
